This question contains spoilers… view spoiler [Did anyone else find this book a bit too simplistic and convenient? I was led to this book because I loved The Count of Monte Cristo and wanted to read a similar book and if you compare how Moreau made his fortune vs Dantes Ames died and I get all his money, then I'll just swashbuckle and kill a bunch of Nobleman.
I found this all a bit underwhelming and predictable. And yet, as the main character Andre Louis reveals, he was never actively plotting revenge, rather circumstances just keep working him against the "villain" less.

We follow his adventures through the next few years, including taking up with a group of traveling theater players and learning to be an excellent swordsman.
It fits his actual character extremely well. The hand of fate keeps bringing Andre-Louis back into contact with de la Tour d'Azyr until the tension-filled finale.
And as a bonus, I got Bohemian Rhapsody stuck in my brain for a few days! So this happened. This novel was first published in , so it's free on Project Gutenberg.

We are talking about France right before the revolution. Try as he co "He was born with a gift of laughter and a sense that the world was mad.
Driven by desire to avenge the killing of his friend he got mixed up in politics to the extend that it became dangerous to his health.
Not to spoil much, but through the book he had to change his career several times each time getting into more and more unexpected occupation.
His very robust sense or irony never left him; he used it as a shield to hide behind in both his darkest and happiest hours.
Considering the goings-on at that time it was probably one of the ways to retain sanity. I have a confession to make. I think Captain Blood is much better; I award it the title of the second-best pirate tale ever told Treasure Island is the best overall tale obviously.
Captain Blood goes straight to the action practically from the first page. I challenge anybody to call it peaceful and quiet. To people that read and loved this book but managed to miss Captain Blood you know who you are : drop everything and read it.
You may thank me later. No, I will not use a picture of Queen performing Bohemian Rhapsody or a still from the movie Wayne's World showing character's reaction to the song.

He finds safety with a tr This reviews can be found on Amaranthine Reads. He finds safety with a travelling troupe of comedic actors and becomes the buffoonish character of Scaramouche, all the while being pursued by treachery, romance and that ever inevitable Revolution that he so carelessly sparked.
This is the best book I've read all year. It is the best book I have read for many a good year, too. It has wit and personification of the most debase of human nature through its characters and yet there is an almost timid nature to their countenance.
I became aware of this book through the Queen song-of course, how else? At least there was abundance of Burgundy. Never in his life had he found Burgundy so plentiful.
Now, let us speak of why I have not given this five stars. I will confess that it should be denoted as a 4. First and foremost, although I adored learning more about the French Revolution, there were times when it felt almost like an info dump, though they were few and far between.
The beginning, I felt, was also a little slow: though the setting needed to be set, of course, it was not as it could have been. There is also to be taken in to consideration the fact that I was in doubt as to whether I should give it five stars.
It is a five-star worthy book, but I am a harsh critic and if there is doubt it will not happen. Of the books I have read, only 25 are five-star rated books and even then I could confidently downgrade half of those if I so choose.
It is a beautiful book. So splendid, so meaningful and so harshly unknown to all. It is a Classic that deserves to be treated like one and I am so exuberantly happy to see that it is rated on average as a 4.
It's also extraordinary given how many books Sabatini has written at least 30 that he is not more well-known and I mourn for him much I do the other fabulous authors we so disdainfully ignore.
One interesting point is that aside from the leap from the staircase to the floor below, Granger did all of his own stunts in the sequence including swinging from the stage into the opera box and dangling over the audience early in the fight.
The only fight that comes anywhere near it is the one between Danny Kaye and Basel Rathbone in "Court Jester". All Titles TV Episodes Celebs Companies Keywords Advanced Search.

They are strongly attracted to each other, but Moreau's ardor suddenly cools when he learns that she is his half-sister.
He hides that information from her, partly because of sympathy after he learns the Comte de Gavrillac has recently died. By chance, de Maynes encounters Marcus Brutus, who turns out to be Moreau's best friend, Philippe de Valmorin Richard Anderson.
A master swordsman, de Maynes provokes de Valmorin into a duel, then toys with his inexperienced opponent before finally killing him.
Enraged, Moreau attacks, but does no better than his dead friend. After de Maynes easily disarms him several times, Moreau chooses discretion over valor and flees for his life, vowing to kill de Maynes the same way he slew de Valmorin.
Chased by de Maynes's henchmen, led by the Chevalier de Chabrillaine Henry Wilcoxon , Moreau hides out in the commedia dell'arte troupe in which Lenore performs.
Forced to disguise himself as the character Scaramouche , he discovers a hidden talent as a performer. Burning for revenge, Moreau seeks out de Maynes' fencing instructor, Doutreval John Dehner , and trains diligently in secret for weeks, while also performing with the troupe.
However, de Maynes appears during one such training session, and they fight for a second time. Moreau is still overmatched, and is saved only by Aline's unexpected arrival, enabling Moreau to escape with Doutreval's assistance.
Moreau decides to seek out Doutreval's teacher, Perigore Richard Hale , taking the troupe to Paris for that purpose. There, Dr.
Dubuque John Litel , a deputy of the new National Assembly , seeks his help. The aristocrats in the assembly are systematically killing off the deputies representing the common people by provoking them into duels.
Moreau is not interested, until Dubuque mentions that de Maynes is one of the duelists; then he eagerly accepts the seat of a deceased deputy. Each day, he shows up at the assembly to challenge de Maynes, only to find his enemy absent on trivial but official duties, arranged by Aline and Lenore working together to protect the man they both love.
However, other nobles in the National Assembly are eager to fight the newcomer, challenging him on a daily basis.
Moreau wins every time. In the meantime, de Maynes becomes engaged to Aline. Overhearing de Maynes' intention to confront Moreau that night, Aline persuades him to take her out instead.
At the suggestion of de Chabrillaine, they attend a performance of the De Binet Troupe, where Andre seizes his opportunity for revenge.
The two men engage in a prolonged duel reputedly the longest in screen history at about seven minutes that ranges throughout the theater and finally back onto the stage itself.Subscribe to America's largest Twitch Video Download and get thousands more definitions and advanced search—ad free!
